Working on Brown

The colour of the month for the Rainbow Challenge is brown. That's perfect because I have been quilting a brown quilt for my friend Marg. She is making this as a comfort quilt for a sick friend and I volunteered to machine quilt it for her. Here it is during the pin basting stage. The simple pattern is large squares and alternating 9 patch blocks made from brown batiks.

In this photo you can see the lovely brown flannel backing.
Instead of batting, the center layer is flannelette, and it is the perfect combination.

It has been such a delight to quilt this... like quilting through butter, not that I have ever quilted butter! LOL
I will start organizing and cutting up my brown scraps as soon as I finish this quilting. To see more brown scrap projects, hop over to SoScrappy.

  1. I don't work a lot with brown, but lately I've noted how rich a color it is. That quilt is definitely rich in color and texture.

  2. What a beautiful collection of browns. I am sure it will bring warm comfort to its new owner. You should ask to get paid in scraps for quilting, their are such yummy batiks in your quilt.

  3. Of course my owls are brown but I have been looking at a bundle of brown and cream fabric that I must have had a plan for at one time and thinking that it is calling me to make a quilt out of it. Your quilting project has reminded me I should get started on it. Thanks.

  5. I had wondered how flannelette would work for batting. Glad to hear it does the job. Beautiful browns.

  10. Such pretty fabrics in that quilt. I'd be begging for all those scraps! I'll have to look into flannelette. Most of quilts end up going north to cold climates.

  14. Love the new blog header. And I feel so warm and cozy just reading about your quilt. I love using flannel as backing but never thought of using it along with flannelette as batting.
