The whole week flew by without much sewing time for me. I did sew a few Carrie Nation blocks because the pieces were already cut out and it was mindless/easy sewing.
I have been doing a lot of handwork at hospital and at my brother's, but am not doing much machine sewing (I will talk more about that in tomorrow's post).
I have been admiring Deb's orange peel blocks and decided that might be just the perfect portable project to help me practice applique. So I have cut some blocks from red scraps to start and think this is just what I need! Thanks for the inspiration Deb!
To see what other quilters are doing with their red scraps, hop over to SoScrappy.
Glad to help! One tip I learned was to use silk thread. I got a medium dark tan and a lighter tan and they blend really well with all fabrics. That was easier than trying to match every color for me. (and cheaper!) I just sewed all mine into X and O blocks this afternoon. I have a feeling I'll be making more of them soon.... maybe an all blue one.
ReplyDeleteOh, you brave woman--actually setting out intentionally to do applique! : )
ReplyDeleteKeeping your brother in my prayers!
Love the red and white orange peals. They are a great way to practice appliqué. And a lovely portable project.
ReplyDeleteI've been admiring Deb's orange peels too. I may join in one of these days.
ReplyDeleteI love to applique myself and do use silk thread as well. I still make lots of mistakes, but it's so relaxing.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy.
The Carrie Nation Blocks are great Mindless stitching. I'm surprised you haven't caught the Hexie BUG. Prayers fro your Brother and You as you care for him.
ReplyDeleteI like your Carrie Nation blocks. Oh my. Such an interesting story behind the lady, Carrie Nation.
ReplyDeleteYour family and brother are in my thoughts.
How fun that you are doing orange peel blocks. Glad you had a bit of simple sewing in the pipeline. Sometimes working on anything complicated is just too much to ask. Sorry to hear that your brother isn't doing better.
ReplyDeleteI have thought about doing little applique blocks as my portable project too, but went for hexies instead.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty blocks. Sending hugs and prayers for peace and comfort for your family.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty blocks!
ReplyDeleteYour family has been in my prayers this week.
