Mostly I have been obsessed with spool blocks because they are easy and mindless, and the perfect size for using up piles of small scraps.
These are my latest red spools. I am sewing 4 spools together to make a 6" block. I am trying to group together 4 similar kinds of reds in each block. I think I only will need about a billion trillion to make a decent sized quilt!
And did you notice that lovely orange peel block in the top left corner of the photo? That's my new applique project, and by the end of that quilt, (circa 2025) I hope to become an expert appliquer! I am using the needle turn technique, and am enjoying it so far. I think I am getting a little better at sewing the points and the curves. These orange peels are being appliqued onto 4" squares.
Hop over to SoScrappy to see what other quilt bloggers are sewing with their red scraps this week.
Your applique is looking quite professional already. Nice sorting of red in those spools. It always amazes me, with each new color how many shades there really are.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have an appliqué project all ready at a moment's notice! My current appliqué project takes a lot of prep work, so it is often not ready when I am ;). Love your spool blocks! Hope you manage to get some red Alamo blocks made - they will add a nice pop to that group of blocks ;-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful red fabrics and red blocks!
ReplyDeleteI plan to make spool blocks next year. They are so cute and should use up some of those very small scraps.
If you got some red batik scraps after the fact would you still make the stars? I have three red batik FQs on my cutting table right now and I am not using all of them in my current project. I could send some pieces to you, I just don't know if they would get to you in time, but I am willing to try.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with your determination and skill in the applique--but sad to lose you to the dark side. : )
Corners and points are the most difficult in applique. I still have trouble sometimes...keep going. Hey buddy I have the same blk/wht stork scissors...twins!?!?
ReplyDeleteThinking of you and your family too!
Love the spools. The applique is perfect!
ReplyDeleteLuckily you only need a billion trillion blocks because if you had needed a ZILLION TRILLION BILLION that would just be too much! Love the orange peel block. The applique looks good to me.
ReplyDeleteI got a kick out of examining your spools to check out all the different red fabrics. And your Orange Peels look terrific. Those are moving up my "to do" list very quickly!
ReplyDeleteYour peels look great! Smart to go with a 4 inch background. Wish I had thought of that! The spools look lovely too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful?
ReplyDeleteGreat looking orange peels and spools. Yes you will need many many trillion spools to make a real quilt. I have been making mine for a year now and could count some day and see what I really need.
ReplyDeleteNice spool blocks, I like the swirly rainbow background fabric in the top right corner. Very nice orange peel block.
ReplyDeleteLove the red and white blocks. Hum more temptation. I'm working on a orange peel quilt also. I'm using the template and starch method to make the peels. Then it's easy to appliqué them on. I'm getting close to finished though. I think I have less than 10 to sew down. I find them surprisingly fast to do. Amazing as I've seldom finished other appliqué projects. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI had to smile looking at this post, trying to catch up on blog reading...I just started an orange peel quilt too :)
ReplyDeletevery fun isn't it?
I thought about making spools too after seeing so many on blogland I Like the idea of just using red and white!
