This is what I created for the blog hop:
This project started in the spring with the "Stitch Me Up"
blog hop. I enjoyed stitching the embroidery, and then it sat unfinished and waiting for the inspiration to finish it. As soon as I saw the hexie hop posting, I immediately thought of using the hexagons as a border for my stitchery. Always trust your creative intuition!
I am new to Hexie stitching. If you are asking yourself "what is a hexie", it is a hexagon shape that quilters use as a quilting design unit. They are traditionally sewn together using the english paper piecing technique (click here for a tutorial), which is what I tried.
Then I placed the whole border on top of the embroidered piece, and hand appliqued it to the yellow fabric.
It worked out perfectly and I couldn't be more pleased with the result. The hexies make a perfect frame for the stitchery!
The quilt's finished size is 10.5" x 9".
I added a bit of hand quilting and embellished the stitchery a bit more. I might add a few more quilting stitches around the hexagons (still waiting for the quilt to tell me that it is finished!)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to finish your stitchery. I always have a lot of pieces sitting around that I don't know how to finish. Your hexies are like a wonderful little trim on the piece. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think the hexie frame is a great idea! Love it around the embroidery. When I use hexies, I use a paper punch to put a hole in the template. To remove paper, I use a small crochet hook through the hole. It works if you don't sew through the template.

ReplyDeleteThe frame is amazing. It is perfect for your Stitch Me Up. I've never tried EPP. I'm anal about my stitches and I learned to do my hexies the traditional piecing way. I do ones that finish at 1". I've never done ones smaller than that. I think if I did really small ones that I would have to EPP. I'm working on a Grandmother's Flower Garden that is 1" finished and doing it by hand using traditional hand piecing. Maybe that's an alternate way for you. We each have our niche for way to do things. Somehow it doesn't make sense to me to cut all that paper and then baste the fabric to the paper and then do a stitch that I don't like to put them together. Just me. Your project is amazing. Thanks for participating and wowing me. I am amazed at how people take one project and finish or embellish it with another hop. You creativity amazes me. Again, thanks for particiapting.
