Indian Orange Peel Update (IOP)

IOP (aka Indian Orange Peel and/or Chompers) has finally seen some progress! I forced myself to sew another block and it lays somewhat flat. There are now 3 of the 25 center blocks done...woohoo!

Admittedly there were a few bad words said, but no tears shed while sewing this block, so improvement is being made!
I have a rule that I only rip out and re-sew a seam three times and then I "call it a day"! This one was bad and is staying that way! The points don't meet and the corners are out and that is "good enough".

I guess this corner is about the same but "not terrible" so I'm leaving that.

And this one?
The points are good and the corners meet up, and there is no pleating in the seam... I think it's as good as I'm ever going to be able do on these blocks!

Looks like I'm sewing some weird kind of origami!

Yep...the wine helps a lot!

  1. And I notice our friend's fav wine...how come she isn't helping?
It is coming along...be the hare, slow and easy wins and the quilt will be finished!!

  2. Finished is better than perfect, especially if you are no longer feeling the love for this project. With all the motion in those blocks, being a bit off isn't going to be real noticeable.

  3. I agree, about finishing. Once quilted it won't be noticed, your fabric choices are beautiful. Are you paper piecing these blocks?

  4. You go girl!!! That will be a lovely quilt when you are done and you will feel so proud knowing you stuck it out and finished it :*)

  7. I have similar joins on a couple of placemats I recently made. But you know, we have been using and enjoying them and not once have either of us noticed where the seams didn't come together as they should have. And your's looks like it will be really fun to quilt, too.

  8. Heck, those seams look great to me! I agree it will never be noticed in the final quilt...... now did the whole bottle disappear while sewing that? Hehe. Whatever gets the job done.

  9. I agree with Kate, my view is finished is better then perfect!

BTW They look good to me!

  11. I love your "three strikes" rule. : )
The ones you aren't happy with would be good enough for me any day. I won't show you a close up of the double wedding ring blocks I occasionally try to sew together.
Will you keep this quilt, or will you be able to look at it with any measure of joy when you have it finished?

  12. Challenging? Yes, definitely.

    Cool? Absolutely!!!

    Keep going . . .

  13. My rule is rip out/reseam only TWICE so you are much more patient than me. And "bad words said"? The air can get pretty blue in my sewing room sometimes....well maybe too often...it depends on how many points are getting cut off...and believe me, they do frequently.

  14. Three rip outs are more than I would do, for sure! Unless you are planning on having this judged in a competition, I think you are doing really well with all those curves and triangles!

  15. I think your blocks look great!! I wouldn't be ripping out any more seams. It's going to be a stunner when you'e finished!!

  16. I think your three rip outs rule is great. Congrats on figuring out a way to 'handle' working on these blocks.:)

  17. "Chompers" is a great nickname! LOL. Three strikes is quite enough for a quilt block that complex. Looks wonderful!

  18. WOW! Look at you go! I will have to drag mine out of hibernation and get to work! Your block looks great! Jacqui is back working on her IOP and two members of the Elgin Piecemakers have finished theirs now...

  19. Love your matching wine set!
While I think it looks just fine - have you ever tried sewing the new line, then taking the old line of stitching out. Sometimes it can guide you for the fix your looking for.

  20. Kathy, Your blocks are beautiful and I'll bet that those points and corners that are off that tiny little bit, won't show up after it's together and quilted. I am so impressed your precision on these blocks. I love paper piecing but I would be afraid to even attempt one of these! I can't wait to see this project completed...it is going to be breath taking! I also adore your quilt and the wavy quilting with hearts...really lovely! Sadly I can't drink wine, but certainly wish I could when I sit down to do Free Motion Quilting. I just can't get my shoulders to relax. Big Hugs...

  21. Looks awesome Kathy! Good for you to get back into it. I'm slowly but surely making progress...only 6 units to go on the paper piecing and all the units are done! Woohoo! I should post some photos of the progress, but I'm too lazy. And, of course, I got sidetracked with another project LOL. But, at least I'm working on it again. I have to finish stitching two rows of the 25 together yet...they do get easier the more you do them and actually get to be fun. Can't wait to see more :-)
