Today is the big reveal of my Civil War quilt blocks! Ta da! Over a year's worth of block piecing and learning about the US Civil War.
Thank you again to Barbara Brackman (pattern writer and blogger) for the wonderful quilty fun I have had in reading her weekly blogposts and in sewing these quilt blocks. I have sewn 42 blocks for a layout of 6 across and 7 down. These are four extra blocks that I don't like, and that will be pieced into the backing. The ones on the left are "too blue", and the ones on the right are "too big". The 42 blocks above are "just right"!
So...now the layout decision. It was my goal to have these sewn into a quilt top by the end of July, and quilt it by the end of August so I can start the new block of the week (guilt free!) in September. I thought I was just going to sew them together randomly, but now that I see the photo on the computer, I am getting other ideas. Do you have any thoughts on this layout?!? Would you care to make a wager as to whether or not I will meet my goal?!?! Say a FQ or two!?!? LOL Hop over to Patchwork Times and see what other quilters are working on today.
Love them, I did a Civil War Diary quilt and learned about the war too. I have my quilt set on point. Now to get some backing fabric so I can quilt it. you will get it done!!
My eyes are drawn to rows 1 to 3. columns 2 to 4, for some reason those seem to form a quilt within a quilt. If it were mine I would switch some of those with some in the other parts of the quilt and see if it makes a difference.
What a beautiful journey! The blocks themselves draw the attention of the beholder; so a simple cream sashing with blue/brown? corner stones might be the ticket.
It's amazing and awe inspiring to zoom in and observe each block's creativeness. A+
I love the way you have them laid out, but to me, they are asking for a sashing and cornerstones, with the sashing and cornerstones continued into the border, so that each block is framed.
Love all of your blocks. I worked on a Dear Jane for about 4 years on and off. One day I decided, there is no way on earth that I am going to finish this quilt. I had about 70 blocks made. I decided to put them together and I made a Baby Jane my way.
congrats on finishing your BB civil war quilt. My blocks are (sadly) still in a box waiting for completion. I have 24 and may call that a finish and put them together so I can start GUILT FREE in September on the new one.
I know you will have it finished by august end. The hard part is behind you!!
I have been loving your color scheme all along. It makes me so happy to see them all together! Whatever you do, do it guilt free, finished or not. This is fun, remember? : )
I love sampler quilts! You always learn something new, esp with the more challenging blocks. As far as the setting goes...Sashing and cornerstones, set on point??? your blocks are wonderful!
Only 10 away from the total number of blocks. I'm thinking of an alternate setting also. I saw a CW quilt at Sisters that I liked alot. Good Luck on a finish- you have a week and 1 day. I cut out a couple today, at least I got this moth's UFO out of the tote. That might be all the progress I make on mine.
WOOHOOO! Congratulations on getting all the blocks done. There is plenty of time to get them put together before the next one starts. I can see them set in diagonal rows with a zig-zag sashing, or maybe in nice concentric rings of alternating blue and brown. Looking forward to seeing how they come together.
And I LOVE them just the way they are. Skip the sashing, its so common and boring. Common in civil war times was to just put them side by side. Great job with the color.
Oh my goodness! Your blocks are so wonderful! I'm not usually a big fan of civil war fabrics, but your colors are so warm and inviting... I could snuggle up in that quilt and take a very serious nap :*)
Congrats on getting your blocks done. Personally I prefer to see a sampler set with sashing to seperate the blocks. Although I'm sure whatever you decide it will look wonderful :)
I love your big reveal! They came out great. I'm not sure what you have in mind but I see a pieced sashing cream/blue/cream with a 9 patch of cream/blue for the cornerstone. Or brown... either would work or brown,blue, brown? Either way your quilt will be just lovely. I'd say if the top is done before September you are good. This could always be a hand quilting through the winter project! Good luck - sleep is overrated!
With all the varitey of blocks, I don't think it will matter how you lay they out. If I were doing this I would leave the blocks where they are and put a small (1-1 1/2" sashing between them so each one stands on it's own. Are you going to have a border? If so I would then put a 2-3" inner border of the same sashing fabric (white or cream) before the outer border. See, don't you wish you hadn't ask?
This is an amazing project, congratulations on keeping up. I think some maroon sashing would be nice, to sort of set off each block. I say YES, you will get it completed and quilted before the next BOM starts up!
