Hand Quilting Day

You will not believe what I am working on this week! My first "quilt-in-a-day" project that I started 18 years ago! All I have left to quilt are the bars on the outside border...so close to finishing. Yep...I think it's about time to finish up this UFO...it's ready now!
I have laboured over this quilting for years, bringing it out to work on a little bit every winter. Then I got interested in hand stitching and hand beading and I lost interest in hand quilting for a while. I still love the way it feels and the way it makes a quilt look, so I will always be doing a hand quilting project, even if it is a little at a time.
So today I am on call at work, and if there is no violence against women in my community today, I get to stay at home with my pager, and luxuriate (is that a word?) with my hand quilting, while I listen to Bonnie Hunter's interview with Pat Sloan on podcast - click here to listen when you have time to enjoy some hand work.

  1. 18 years! Brought a chuckle to me. At least you are persistent and will get it done some day soon.

  2. There is just nothing like the look of hand stitching.....You are "savouring" it. :-)

  3. I love hand quilting, and how it looks when it is done. I am so slow though. Maybe it is because I savour the whole process.
    Your quilting looks lovely, btw.

  6. Your hand quilting is beautiful.. There is nothing like hand quilting. I wish I was able to do it but my hands won't let me.

  7. Are you quilting it in a hoop or on your lap?

  8. Susan - I have an oval hoop on a floor stand which I am using for this quilt, but I prefer my circular lap
hoop since it doesn't take up so much space in our family room and is more portable.

  9. I can imagine how elated you will be to get this one finished. I, too, like a circular hoop on my lap when hand quilting.

  10. I just love handquilting and the finished look on a quilt. I haven't had one in my hoop in a couple years now. I am reeeeally hoping once this baby is born (I'm in my 7th month right now and well getting down on my hand and knees on the floor is not an option anymore) I plan to get one ready in the hoop again. It will be a nice little project I can take up from time to time and still be close by for my little boy when he needs me.

    Quiltingly Yours
    Andrea
