Mystery Quilt Layout Decision

I have finally finished sewing the blocks for the DD mystery quilt from Quiltville. I am starting step #6 and have to decide how to put the blocks together. I really can't decide, so thought I would throw it out to blogland for input. What do you like best? The first two photos are the way the pattern is written, having the blocks on pointe...with either the pink or the brown floral setting triangles.

When the blocks are put on pointe, I notice the teal squares more prominately. What do you think?
I tried a straight set and I think you see the brown stars a little more, which I like. Then I tried spacing the blocks a bit and would put in a light sashing with pink cornerstones. It would take me longer to sew the top together but I think I might like it a little more...not that I don't like the other settings too!
The photo on the left shows the blocks in a straight set and the photo on the right shows the additional sashing.

What is your vote?
A) On pointe with pink setting triangles
B) On pointe with brown floral setting triangles
C) Straight set
D) Straight set with sashing

  1. I like C. Straight set with no sashing. But you can't go wrong here!
I received my Pooh quilt kit yesterday. I was so excited to have a package in the mail from Canada! I will blog about it soon. I am so behind, as usual, on blogging. Thanks so much!!

  2. I like C -- but then I always like the diagonals the 9 patches create!

  3. I like D - the sashing looks great with the blocks. I don't like the pink as a border, but that can be because I am not a real fan of pink. It will look great which ever way you decide!!

  4. Hi Kathy,
I vote for C. All settings are beautiful, but that is my favorite. Great continuity. You did a wonderful job with your blocks.

  5. I like the straight setting with the extra cornerstones. It's different from Bonnie's. On point makes a larger quilt though. I like the Brown setting triangles. They are all pretty. I need to get back to working on mine...

  6. Oooo Kathy! Thanks for sharing so many possible layouts. I've seen a few Straight settings, and HAD pretty much my mind set on using a Straight setting as well once I get to that point. (I haven't started it yet, but will be making to for my babysitter for her graduation)

BUT-----I must say, without a doubt, that I would choose the onpoint layout with the brown fabric! That brown fabric appears to match the teal so nicely and it's just so PRETTY!
So, B for me (I think it was B......???)

  7. I like B. I think it brings out the brown stars and makes the chopped up print make more sense.

  16. HI,
I like setting B I love the way the brown makes the rest of the setting look. I love the teal. I am not too fond of cheddar. I wish I chose a different color. Yours looks great any way you lay it.

  17. Hello, Thanks for sharing the pictures. It's nice to see several layouts side by side. I really like (c) however, each of them are gorgeous. This is exactly why I have a lot of tops, even once I stitch them together sometimes I am not sure, so I hesitate to quilt and bind until I know. Your colors are lovely.

  18. B. On point with brown floral. :) It really pulls the quilt together.

  19. straight setting no sashing... the sashing appears to dominate just in the small picture.
Can I suggest you put them into your photo setting on the computer as four consecutive photos and then do quick flicks between... choose between two keep preferred.. enter another and choose between that one and the old best... then choose between the fav of three and the final setting

  23. hello Kathy. Just because of the extra jazz I like the picture 2. and I wouldn't go with the sashing. Good Luck

  24. i like the straight set the best because the chains are on the diagonal. i don't like the sashing with it at all. it loses something. but then, again, it is your quilt and mine is still uncut in a basket. patti in florida

  25. I like the straight setting best, but I am biased, because I am straight setting mine. It didn't occur to me to add sashing, but I like yours with the added sashing. I do have one question for you. If you want to accentuate the brown, did you try brown sashing? I've been looking at the picture trying to picture that, but alas, I'd have to see it. Of course, ask ten different quilter's opinion, and you'll get twelve answers :c)

  26. I definitely like the on-point setting. I would go with A and use the pink triangles and come back with the brown floral for my border.

  27. I like D, it gives it a softer look

  33. I like the straight set with sashings.

  35. I like the second setting best. The dark setting triangles really sets it off. I really like the teal instead of the cheddar, although I like that too. I did mine in Cheddar, it was a first for me and made me stretch a bit.\

  36. I like A Kathy but I think I'm in the minority.

  37. "D".....I think I'm in the minority.........but seeing the straight set with sashing, IMHO, is the way to go! I'm at the same point.......on point set is on design board now, yesterday the straight set was up, but now I think I may go with straight set and sashing!

  38. I vote for "D". I like it best and think you'll be happier even though it will be more work. Happy Sewing.
